October 25: Master Naturalist Conference / Butterfly talk and Meet the Author
Butterflies have enchanted humans for time immemorial, but when National Geographic Magazine announced the “discovery” of the monarch butterfly
overwintering sites in Mexico on its August 1976 cover, a particular orange-and-black butterfly was literally thrust onto the coffee tables of America.
Monarchs have since butterflies have captured the imagination of the world, especially those of us who live along their migratory flyway. How and why have we become so captivated by this insect? Should we stop eating avocados since Mexico’s cartels are clearing the roosting forests to cash in on the “green gold”? What role does citizen science play? What about Tropical milkweed? Are monarchs endangered or not? What to believe? What’s the right thing to do?
Through natural history and personal experience, this session will explore these and other questions and encourage others to do the same.
